Admission to the School of Journalism

The Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism uses the same admission standards as the University for pre-journalism students applying to the undergraduate program. Visit the WVU undergraduate admissions page for details on general WVU admission.

You may also qualify as a direct admit to the School of Journalism if you are a freshman or transfer student with at least a 2.75 cumulative high school grade-point average and at least a 23 enhanced ACT English score or at least a 530 re-centered SAT verbal score. (These standards were updated as of Sept. 15, 2007.)

Students who are not accepted as direct admit students apply to the School while in JRL 215. Upon successful completion of the course with a "C" or better, they are fully admitted. If you are not accepted as a direct admit to the School of Journalism, you must meet the following requirements when applying:

  • Achievement of at least C grades in English 101 and 102;
  • Demonstration of necessary skills by scoring competitively on the school's Journalism Qualifying Examination (JQE) to vie for competitive acceptance into the School of Journalism;
  • Completion of JRL 101 and JRL 215 with at least C grades;
  • Completion of ULIB 101 with at least a C grade;
  • Completion of at least a 2.0 cumulative grade-point average;
  • Successful completion of 36 or more hours (excluding Fs) if you are a pre-journalism major; and
  • Completion of a contract, an application for admission to the School of Journalism, and an Academic Status Change Form (typically during the JRL 215 term).
After thorough review, all candidates receive an acceptance or rejection letter regarding admission to the School of Journalism. An acceptance letter will include your newly assigned advisor's name. You must consult with your advisor to pre-register and to obtain a new personal identification number each term until you graduate. Candidates may reapply to a specific sequence curriculum during a subsequent academic term if they do not gain admission on the first attempt.

Admission to either of the graduate programs is limited to holders of baccalaureate or equivalent degrees from institutions of higher learning and specific requirements as set by the School of Journalism. Please review the Graduate Programs page for more information on admissions.
