Journalism Qualifying Exam (JQE)

Understanding the JQE

The Journalism Qualifying Examination, a 100-point multiple-choice test offered on two dates each term and once per summer, includes five parts:

  • 20-Vocabulary
  • 20-Reading Comprehension
  • 20-Spelling
  • 20-Language Mechanics
  • 20-Language Expressions

A student must attain a JQE score sufficient to allow for competitive School of Journalism admission. JQE scores, combined with college GPAs, will determine JRL 215 enrollment plus School of Journalism admission to the Advertising, Broadcast News, News-Editorial and Public Relations programs.

Taking the JQE

To take the JQE, you must first pre-register and pre-pay at the Carruth Center on the third floor of the student services center. Pre-registration and pre-payment are required. You must present a photo ID and pay $20 cash (correct change only) at pre-registration.

IF YOU ARE NOT PRE-REGISTERED YOU WILL NOT BE ADMITTED TO THE TEST!

On the exam date, you must present your photo ID and No. 2 pencils.
