Summer intern at NBC5 Chicago
“The filming experience I learned at WVU gave me more opportunities going into the internship.”
Q: Where did you intern, name of the company or organization, and from when to when?
A: I interned at NBC5 Chicago in their Web department from May to August. It was a learning experience with college credit.
Q: How did you hear about the internship?
A: My boss, Marcus Riley, is an alumnus of WVU [School of Journalism], and he came to Morgantown for a panel discussion. I showed my interest, and the rest is history.
Q: What was a typical day like during your internship?
A: During the day, I worked on podcasts, learned how to film and edit vodcasts, updated the webpage and created content for the site. At night or on the weekends, I was given the opportunity to cover events in the Chicago area from concerts, festivals, celebrity interviews to restaurant openings. My duties at the events varied from photographer, cameraman, on-air talent to simply being of assistance.
Q: What was the most important lesson you learned during the internship?
A: The Internet is a whole different ballpark. From content location to an immediate deadline, it’s an area that I think all journalism students should be aware of.
Q: What aspects of the internship do you think will serve you well later in the job market?
A: Journalism is going toward the Web. Knowing how a website runs within a television company is very beneficial.
Q: What advice would you give an SOJ student interested in pursuing an internship?
A: Go into it with an open mind. This is an opportunity to prove yourself and show what you’re made of, so be flexible and willing to do anything.
Q: How did the School of Journalism prepare you to succeed in your internship?
A: The filming experience I learned at WVU gave me more opportunities going into the internship.
Q: What experiences from the internship will you be able to apply to your work at the School of Journalism?
A: I plan on taking the skills I learned with shooting and Web site design to put it into a multi-media project I’m apart of my senior year.
Q: If given the opportunity, would you do another internship?
A: Definitely. An internship is a learning experience. Whether it’s a positive or negative one, it gives you insight into who you are as a person and what you want to do in the future.
