About Our Advertising Program

The P.I. Reed School of Journalism’s (SOJ) advertising program teaches students how to develop and produce persuasive messages and advertising campaigns. Students build skills in writing, research, graphic design, direct marketing, media planning and campaign management.

Advertising students in the SOJ plan and produce advertising campaigns for actual businesses, gaining real-world experience that can lead to careers at advertising agencies, corporations and public-sector fields.

The SOJ also helps place students in internships that offer hands-on experience beyond the classroom. Students participate in internships everywhere from top New York advertising agencies to Capitol Hill and the White House.

The program boasts an active student-run advertising agency. Martin-Hall Agency offers students the opportunity to work with real clients and provides them with professional networking opportunities. The Martin-Hall Agency team members also participate in the national AAF Competition.

Advertising Program Requirements

Advertising majors earn a Bachelor of Science in Journalism, Advertising (BSJ) degree upon successful completion of the program.

To graduate, all SOJ majors must complete a minimum of 128 credit hours.

In addition to required SOJ core and advertising program courses, students must take a specified number of courses outside the SOJ. Students must also complete a minor (or second concentration), as well as General Education Curriculum (GEC) requirements approved by the SOJ.

Finally, the SOJ’s accreditation guidelines require that students take a minimum of 80 hours outside of the SOJ, 65 of which must be liberal arts courses. Typically, students meet those requirements through the GEC and minor courses but should consult with their academic advisor to insure they are on track to graduate.

Students should refer to the following documents when planning their schedules:
