Over the past week, while working on our first show, I was able to capture moments and shoot interview segments with my classmates. Also, I am the video playback operator behind the scenes in the control room. I helped film interviews, b-roll, SOT-teases, and standups at the Hope Coliseum, shoot interviews at Morgantown High School, and I also went to a club ultimate frisbee team practice to help shoot interviews and extra b-roll.
The first thing I did was help Kam film interviews at the Coliseum with Blue and Gold Enterprises and the Mountaineer Athletic Club. He asked questions about the new patches and what the Antero and Monster Energy patches are doing for the conference and program as a whole. I wish I had pinched in a little more on framing for the second interview because I thought it was too wide. We also filmed his standups and SOT-teases outside of the coliseum, since we were already there to shoot the interviews.
Next, I helped Pablo shoot interviews at the band practice field by the hospital for the ultimate frisbee club team. There were some technical issues with audio, and I wish Pablo and I were more prepared going into it, but my b-roll turned out great with the sunset and how they ran practice. I wish I went up on the hillside to get some cool wide shots of practice and maybe the sunset in the background could've gone well for the package.
I then went to Morgantown High School with Gabe to help film a package about the football team and some upcoming games, players, and coaching perspectives. I was only able to be there for about half of the practice, but I still got a good amount of b-roll that was usable. We filmed two interviews, one of them was with the coach and the other with the quarterback. I wish I took more wide-shot b-roll during practice and closer shots of players to add more to the story.
Before fix day on Monday, James, Jackson and I went to Studio B to film the adventure block for the show. We ran into some technical issues with light reflecting off the board, but hopefully next time I shoot there we can have a solution to fix it.
That was all I shot leading up to the first show, because of a trip I had planned that meant I was out of town for about five days. However, I really enjoyed being the video playback operator. I thought I did really well and made sure everything was ready to go going into the show. One thing I need to work on is not jumping too early on a picture for the background TV and timing it correctly.
