Fall 2025 Producer's Blog #3

|

We have officially gotten through another show for this semester of Mountaineer Playbook. From the start, this show was a lot different than the first two. I got to step out of my usual producer duties to help multiple classmates shoot their packages this week. It felt cool seeing that three of the pieces of content going into our show were partially shot by me, and it made me appreciate the work our ENGs put in a lot more.

Overall, this show was frustrating from start to finish. A lot of aspects didn’t come out the way we had wanted, and that came especially from my part. While it wasn’t the major step up we had hoped for from show #2, I think a lot of good will come from this experience. Writing the script for this show was weirdly complicated for me, and it ended up showing up with a lot of changes having to be made and our show ended up running over on time. I think this experience will be valuable to look back on going into show #4.

Like I mentioned, our show ran over and this led to us having to cut a VO to leave enough time for our full ending. This disappointed me mainly because I shot a lot of the VO, but also because I was taking away an entire VO read from one of our anchors. In the future, this is something I need to recognize and deal with a lot earlier than show day. Looking back, I think you can easily tell how strapped we were for time, and I can also use this in my future writing to keep our timing accurate.

We ran into more issues on show day, and I think by the time we got to our third attempt, everyone was feeling pretty tired. I tried my best to keep everyone on set upbeat, but, as the producer, I need to do a better job of staying in it until we are done. I started messing up some of my cues, even after doing them two times prior, and I can’t let that happen again. I also think I can improve on a lot of other things on the studio side still, like my terminology and timing, so that our anchors will have an easier time doing what they need to do.

While there were some difficulties, I am still excited to go into show #4, and I am looking forward to getting to work now that I have another show under my belt. In my first blog, I mentioned how I thought this team would work really well together, and I think that has only improved now that we are through three shows. By this point, we’ve seen a lot of each other and getting to do things like shoot with someone you haven’t before, like I got to do. I’m slightly sad knowing we only have two shows left as a team, but nonetheless, I am ready to get back to work and move forward.
