For many college athletes, competing at the next level means leaving home behind. But for Morgantown native Lyla Byers, home is exactly where her journey continues.

“When I was getting ready to go to college, I always wanted to go to West Virginia University,” Byers said.

From local courts to collegiate competition, Byers has spent years developing her game. Now, she competes at a high level while still surrounded by familiar faces in the stands.

“It means a lot to be able to have all my friends and family at all my matches,” she said. “Everyone can come out every week and see me compete. I’ve always been a WVU fan, going to sporting events, especially tennis matches, so it’s really awesome to be able to do that myself.”

That strong support system has shaped not only her performance but also her mindset. Her mother says the Morgantown community has played a key role in her journey.

“The community in Morgantown is a very big family,” said Kari Byers. “They definitely look out for their own. They support her and are proud of her, as we are too.”

Now competing in the Big 12, Byers is facing tougher opponents, but the challenge has only added to her growth.

“I get to compete in singles and doubles against high-level players who are competing for national championships and even at the pro level,” she said. “Getting that experience is extremely valuable.”

Byers has shown real progress this season. She’s picked up wins in both singles and doubles, with just two losses so far. As she keeps adding to her record, she’s also aiming for a spot among the program’s all-time greats.

With her family cheering from the stands, Byers is hoping to keep her momentum going. The WVU women’s tennis team returns home to play the UCF Golden Knights on Sunday, April 12, as they look for their second Big 12 win.
