One of West Virginia University’s most recognizable traditions returned to the court at the WVU Hope Coliseum as the men’s basketball team debuted its Coal Rush uniforms and honored the state’s coal mining heritage this month.
The Coal Rush tradition, introduced in 2024, made its first appearance in men’s basketball as the Mountaineers faced 13th-ranked Texas Tech on February 8. Fans dressed in black filled the Coliseum, matching the team’s all-black uniforms designed to symbolize the grit and resilience of West Virginia’s coal miners.

Hunter Hays, a coal miner from Marion County, said the tribute reflects the sacrifices miners make every day.
“We are being celebrated for being tough, you know, whether it's physically, mentally, or emotionally. Whether it’s someone who sacrificed a lot not just for myself, not just for my family, not just for you know, but for everybody as a whole. It’s just nice to be celebrated in a way that’s not negative.”
Men’s basketball head coach Ross Hodge said the initiative gives players a better understanding of the people they represent.
“Give our guys a little bit of perspective to the people of this state, how hard they work, blue collar. Again, anytime you get a chance to honor them I think it’s something unique and special,” Hodge said in a post-game press conference.
Dr. William Hal Gorby, an associate professor of history at WVU, said coal mining remains deeply rooted in West Virginia communities.
“As generation after generation of miners are involved in the industry there's family connections,” Gorby said. “There's community connections that serve parts of the state even more than now.”
Despite the Mountaineers falling to Texas Tech 70–63, fans in attendance said the Coal Rush debut created an energized atmosphere and highlighted a sense of shared pride across Mountaineer Nation.
