The food truck industry is on the rise, transforming the way people experience dining across the country. Over the last two decades, the industry has grown into a business worth nearly $3 billion.
Food trucks have gained traction and become a popular lunchtime option, offering fast, tasty food but also a taste of diverse cultures.
There are now more than 90,000 food trucks in operation across the country, with the industry growing by about 8% each year. This national boom is reflected locally, where trucks are serving up customers with distinctive dishes and bold flavors.
In Morgantown, food trucks are no longer just a novelty; they are becoming an essential part of the city’s local dining culture. From classic street food to global fusion cuisine, food trucks are adding both convenience and diversity to local meals.
One food truck in Morgantown – The Island Halal Puerto Rican Fusion – is doing just that, serving Puerto Rican-inspired halal fusion dishes. With bright colors, vibrant music, and the smell of fresh spices, the truck offers more than just food. Owner Abdul Diawarat says it delivers a cultural experience.
Customers say food trucks offer both quality and a chance to support local businesses.
“They’re like a smaller business, I want to try and support that, and honestly, in my experience, I’ve noticed food trucks, the food is a whole lot better in my opinion,” said customer Armando Cruz.
“We want to bring that wholesome feeling of Puerto Rico to Morgantown. That island vibe because we already have Jamaican Spice. Having that island collabs is just amazing,” Diawara said.
Customers are especially drawn to the unique menu options.
“The rice bowls, I’ve always been a rice girl. I love rice and salmon or rice and chicken. And his secret sauces, absolutely amazing,” said customer Charity Fisher.
Lower startup costs have also contributed to the industry’s growth. Opening a food truck typically costs around $100,000, significantly less than a traditional restaurant, making it an attractive option for entrepreneurs. About 60% of food trucks become profitable within their first year.
Despite the business potential, Diawara says his mission goes beyond profit.
“We don’t have a lot of diversity when it comes to food per say . Especially for people who’ve never been out of the country or the states, this would be a good time to experience something like that,” he said.
As food trucks continue to grow in popularity — generating more than $1 billion annually — they are reshaping the local dining landscape. In Morgantown, that means new flavors, new cultures, and new experiences are rolling into town.
For Diawara, success is simple: If customers leave with full stomachs and a taste of his culture, then he’s done his job.
