Anchoring the fifth show was on my mind from the moment that I was brought on as one of two WVU News sports anchors. Professor Dahlia had drilled into our heads that the sports anchor that showed the most progress and produced the best work would be the one that would anchor three, as opposed to two, shows.

Filming for the game

After my first story was picked up by ESPNU, I knew that I had a reputation of solid work to continue. The WVU and ESPNU partnership goes back quite a while, so when I was chosen as one of two sports anchors, I understood the responsibility I had to portray WVU and the Reed College of Media in the best light.

Auditions At auditions, I felt pumped because I was finally able to do what I’ve always wanted to do. Freshman year, I wanted to get past all the prerequisites and actually get into sports reporting. When I sat down on camera, I felt excited to finally be auditioning for the sports anchor position. While reading the script, I kept thinking just be yourself and show personality. Over time, we were taught to sound professional and not really show much emotion because you don’t want to sound like you're siding with a team or story. With this class, it’s the same but I can be more of myself and try to bring the story to life with my voice. Therefore, during auditions I tried to be myself and as a result, I got the position.

I don’t normally get nervous before going on air, but during this semester’s Anchor Auditions, I was jittery. I’ve loved sports all of my life, and I was trying out to be one of two sports anchors. The selected two would also get the opportunity to work with ESPNU, because of WVU’s long-standing partnership.
