For our last show, we did a special edition newscast on mental health. I was very excited to delve into this topic because I myself had mental health issues as a student-athlete in high school. I was able to schedule an interview with sport psychologist Dr. Dayna Charbonneau to talk more about the mental health issues that Division I athletes experience daily. 

This week was definitely a new challenge for me. I thought shooting the basketball game was tough because it was all handheld shooting. Even though handheld shooting isn’t new to me, it was difficult shooting underneath the hoop trying to get a variety of different angles. I think this was great practice for the next time I shoot the basketball team.

Filming my last package: This newscast, I focused my story on international athletes and how they face challenges beyond the field. I was able to interview members of both the WVU Men’s and Women’s Soccer team as well as the WVU Rifle team. I enjoyed my time learning about their experiences and what drove them to play a sport in a different country. On top of that, it was awesome to learn how each of them have found a way to make themselves a part of the Mountaineer family. 

Filming my last package:

For the second newscast, I did a story on the WVU women’s soccer team that opened their Big 12 season versus Iowa State. The overall atmosphere of the game was magic. The home crowd was massive and ready to get loud! This year,  the women’s soccer team has a roster that sports eighteen underclassmen. However, you wouldn’t have been able as the Mountaineers came out with a 2-0 victory over the Cyclones. I didn’t feel too well during the game, but I ended up getting some great shots. There definitely is room for improvement when it comes to shooting for my next package, but I think the first two weeks have already taught me a lot.
